About the Project
Hotspot Data is a real-time web application built to monitor and analyze fire activity in South Lebanon and along the Lebanese-Israeli border. The platform ingests NASA satellite data to generate a continuously updated spatial overview of active fire hotspots, enabling the detection, tracking, and analysis of fire events as they develop. By grounding the platform in remote sensing data at the satellite scale, it captures fire activity across a geographically complex and often difficult to access terrain with a level of coverage and temporal resolution that ground-based monitoring cannot provide alone.
The platform structures this data into an operational and analytical environment. Users can track fire progression in real time, identify high-risk areas based on historical and current hotspot patterns, and examine the spatial distribution of fire activity across the region. The integration of historical hotspot data alongside live feeds allows for the analysis of recurring patterns, seasonal trends, and risk concentrations, providing the basis for informed prevention strategies and coordinated response efforts. The cross-border geographic scope of the platform is deliberate, reflecting the regional scale at which fire risk and disaster management operate in this territory.
The platform addresses a defined set of institutional and operational users: environmental researchers, policymakers, firefighters, and governmental and non-governmental agencies engaged in disaster management and environmental protection. For each, it provides a shared situational awareness of fire activity, consolidating satellite-derived data into a single accessible interface that supports both operational decision-making and longer-term policy and planning. Its capacity to facilitate cross-border coordination positions it as a regional resource for collaborative fire management in a geopolitically sensitive and environmentally vulnerable area.
