About the Project
Lebanon occupies a remarkable ecological position. Compressed between the Mediterranean coast, the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges, and the arid margins of the Syrian steppe, it shelters a disproportionate richness of plant life relative to its size. This diversity, accumulated over millennia at the meeting point of three biogeographic zones, has drawn the attention of naturalists, explorers, and scientists since the nineteenth century, leaving behind a documentary record as layered as the landscape itself.
That record lives, in significant part, in the herbarium collections of the Natural History Museum at the American University of Beirut. Spanning nearly two centuries of fieldwork beginning in 1840, the collections preserve thousands of botanical specimens gathered by generations of collectors, among them figures such as George Edward Post, Henri Blanche, and Georg August Schweinfurth, each of whom moved through Lebanese terrain at different historical moments and under different conditions. The Post Herbarium Flora in Lebanon project brings this archive into a spatial and interactive form, digitizing the provenance of each record and anchoring it, where coordinates exist, to the precise location of collection. Where exact geographic data is unavailable, records have been carefully aggregated to the village level, a methodological choice made transparent within the platform and one that preserves spatial meaning without overstating precision.
The platform allows researchers, students, and curious visitors alike to navigate this history across multiple dimensions: through an interactive map clustering records by location, through filters that surface the number of records, families, genera, and collectors associated with any given area, and through temporal views that trace collection activity by year and month across nearly two hundred years. Taxonomic and geographic distribution visualizations extend the inquiry further, turning archival data into patterns that speak to both botanical science and cultural history. Taken together, the project does something that individual specimens in a drawer cannot: it renders a long, distributed, and deeply human process of observing the Lebanese landscape legible as a whole.
